Washington

9 July 1813

After the admiral’s parole was granted, they were given food and water and a tour of the small but deadly warship. Cochrane was shocked when he saw the steam engine driving the small ship and the huge Dahlgren cannon. Mary was correct. “This was the future of naval warfare,” Thomas thought. He was also impressed by the new naval uniforms the Americans were wearing. After the tour, Admiral Cochrane had been given the captain’s cabin to share with Mary. It was not as elegant as his own in the former Ceylon, but it had a bed for Mary to sleep in. He caught a few hours of sleep on the one chair in the cabin.

The following Friday morning, just after sunrise, the USS York had arrived in Washington and dropped anchor in the Potomac River. Commander Harris sent a runner onshore to notify the Washington garrison of his rescued survivors. One of the Humvees had arrived within the hour to transport the two survivors to military headquarters.

“This must be one of your war machines,” Admiral Cockburn mentioned as they got in and the vehicle drove off.

“Yes, it is. It is powered by an internal combustion engine and can travel at 60 miles an hour. It can mount an automatic weapon or grenade launcher.”

“Wow, amazing. We are almost there. I see your White House.”

“Don’t worry, Thomas, I am sure General Poulos will be there to meet us. He will be very thankful for you rescuing me.”

“He will not be happy that you were flogged.”

“That was not your fault Thomas. You saved me. Besides, he does not need to know. I want that kept private. I owe you my life,” she said as she gave him a passionate kiss, and he put his arms around her and returned the kiss.

“I hope we get to see each other, said Thomas.”

“We will. I will see to that. We are here. What the hell?” Said Mary.

General Poulos and an honor guard met them. I guess the honor guard is for you, certainly not me.”

“Not much honor in my defeat and being taken prisoner of war.”

Cochrane stepped out of the carriage. “Detail Atten hut. Present arms.”

“Welcome to Washington, Admiral Cochrane. May I introduce you to General Smith, commander of science and development? I am Major General George Poulos, head of US military intelligence.”

“Pleased to meet you. Mary has told me much about you. I am also offering you my parole. Not that I want to go back to England to be shot for loss of my fleet.”

“Your parole is granted,” said General Smith.

“Thank you.”

“I am sure you had a tour of the steam gunboat and saw the guns on it. There was no way you could have beaten us with the maneuverability of a steamboat and the new guns.”

“Yes, I did, and I believe you after seeing that ship's capabilities. Nonetheless, the admiralty will be looking for its pound of flesh. I am in no hurry to go back and face a court-martial and possible execution.
